A turn-key solution, the ICS expands BASCOM's offerings to include connectivity, security, and performance features.
"BASCOM has always focused on easing the transition into classroom usage of technology," said Peter Cirasole, president of BASCOM. "ICS will enable to us to bring this seamless integration to an enterprise level, addressing a wider range of education-specific network and administrative needs."
As a solution for curriculum-based management, ICS includes BASCOM's Access Management Engine (AME)? and Global Chalkboard?. While the AME en-ables educators to select and focus access on Internet content and services meeting their specific needs, the Global Chalkboard provides an Internet starting point of curriculum-categorized Web sites, selected under the supervision of an education advisory board.
In addition to its instructional features, ICS provides a drop-in solution for networked access, enabling workstations to communicate efficiently with the Internet through a single gateway. As features of the core software technology, a fully integrated proxy cache and firewall address the network security and classroom productivity needs raised by K-12 technology deployment.
The pre-configured firewall af-fords complete protection of a school's internal network and its sen-sitive information. This is accomplished through a secure 'multiple LAN' configuration, ensuring that information stored on school networks remains protected from outside access while still allow-ing schools to enjoy all of the Internet services they need. Also preconfigured and fully integrated, the proxy cache preserves often-accessed Web pages locally, making them more readily accessible in a time-critical classroom environment. The resulting bandwidth savings enable schools to gain better performance out of less expensive access connections.
By providing a host of automatic services from Internet-delivered software upgrades to remote configuration back-ups, a Software Subscription Service ensures that school technology coordinators and other administrative staff receive an essentially maintenance-free solution.
"Internet technology has been focused primarily on the needs of corporate enterprises," said Mr. Cirasole. "We're excited about the opportunity to bring this technology to the education community, in a form that supports their existing goals and methodology."
