Developed in response to widespread educator concern regarding the safety, productivity, and educational focus of school email communications, the feature enables teachers to select approved addresses for both sending and receiving messages. These selections can specify either individual addressees or whole email domains; the latter capability enables teachers to approve communication between their students and any addressee from a specified school or organization. During test or study time, teacher may also choose to suspend email communication altogether. Just as it processes requests for Web content and Internet services, the Access Management Engine checks email transmission against teacher selections, granting access accordingly.
"Ideally, email should expand the boundaries of the education community to include students and educators from anywhere in the world," said BASCOM president Peter Cirasole. "Our customers wanted to use email for collaborative learning projects and pen pal programs, but often did not out of concern for the privacy, safety, and educational focus of the traditional school environment. This feature provides teachers with the reassurance that kids are communicating with other students and educators whose addresses the teacher has selected," Cirasole said today.
Because BASCOM uses a remote, host- or server-based approach to deliver its Access Management Engine products, customers received today's upgrade automatically through an Internet channel. Without being required to download or install a CD-ROM containing the latest release, the management feature and corresponding online "help" screens were transparently added to the tabbed AME interface, with an accompanying email notification to customers.
"We try to make the transition into using technology easier for everybody within the school environment," said Mr. Cirasole, commenting on automatic upgrade delivery. "While the [email] feature itself provides teachers with a lot of reassurance, the automatic delivery makes the software much easier for school technology coordinators to deploy."
