OpenLinux Foundation Platform for BASCOM Internet Communications Server (ICS) K-12 Solution.
OREM, Utah, /PRNewswire/ - January 18, 1999—BASCOM today announced the availability of its Internet Communications Server (ICS), an educational software/hardware solution developed for the OpenLinux OS from Caldera Systems Inc. Having successfully deployed ICS at key regional sites, BASCOM will now make it available to K-12 schools through the third largest hardware OEM and accompanying reseller channels. BASCOM's use of OpenLinux provides the education vertical market with its first Linux-specific application.
While providing a secure and easily transportable platform for future alliances, BASCOM's decision to use OpenLinux was based on the unique needs of the education community - needs that fell directly under Caldera Systems' focus on Linux-based business solutions: stable, proven, tested and supported.
"In order to adapt the broad range of available Internet services to meet classroom and curriculum needs, K-12 schools find themselves having to deploy and maintain technology without the staff enjoyed by many businesses," said Robert DeRosa, BASCOM's Chief Technology Officer. "We chose OpenLinux because we wanted the reliability of Linux, backed-up by Caldera Systems' thorough testing, support and business focus. Schools shouldn't have to worry about whether or not technology and support will be available when they need it," continued DeRosa. "Using OpenLinux and ICS, educators can now re-focus their resources on education."
"OpenLinux and BASCOM's ICS are perfect examples of a turn-key education solution that is uniquely suited to Linux," said Ransom Love, President and CEO of Caldera Systems Inc. "Caldera Systems Inc. is committed to the services and technologies that enable ISVs, system integrators, VARs and software developers like BASCOM to deploy their solutions to the OEM and VAR channels."
As a next generation education solution, BASCOM's ICS combines the needed benefits of proxy caching and firewall protection with curriculum-based content, content-management tools and Web portals. As a reliable OS whose history parallels that of the Internet, a well-supported Linux foundation provides the ideal platform for a K-12 Internet solution. This same need for a tested and proven Linux foundation moved the third-largest public school system in the state of California - Kern County - to choose OpenLinux to provide Internet services to its 47 school districts.
"OpenLinux provides the stability and scalability needed to support mission-critical applications," said Wilson Mattos, Network Operations Manager, for the Kern County Superintendent of Schools. "In addition, the Open Source model and support provided by Caldera Systems has given us the flexibility needed to optimize each system to our own particular needs." Availability ICS is available through BASCOM as a fully integrated, drop-in solution running the OpenLinux OS on special purpose hardware. BASCOM's OEM partner offers its version of ICS through a package solution that includes presentation tools, education software, desktops, notebooks and servers. Both solutions tap into the power and reliability of Caldera System's OpenLinux, allowing teachers nationwide to release the true educational value of the Internet.
