BASCOM Pioneers Easy to Use Methodology for Its Linux-Based, Thin Server Applications

Company Remotely Upgrades Solutions Across Installed Base in the K-12 Market.

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., /PRNewswire/- September 15, 1999—BASCOM Global Internet Services, Inc. (BASCOM), a pioneering developer of Linux-based Internet applications, today announces the remote, automatic upgrade of its flagship Internet Communications Server (ICS) solution, further demonstrating its ability to provide users with Internet solutions that seamlessly and transparently tap the intrinsic power of the Linux operating system. Having identified Linux over three years ago as a robust platform for cost-effective, secure and reliable content management and connectivity solutions, today's announcement positions BASCOM as the industry's premier provider of easy-to-use, thin server software-providing the foundation for inexpensive, efficient and easy to manage appliances that connect users to the Internet for specified functions.

"Long before the current Linux wave, we made what at that time was considered a bold commitment to developing on the Linux platform for the stability, scalability and support for such complex tasks as content management, firewalling, proxy caching, and routing that we sought to offer," said BASCOM president, Peter Cirasole. "Our remote upgrade of all ICS installations underscores our commitment to giving users the benefits of Linux while providing a web-based solution that makes the underlying complexity and management transparent. What we've done is akin to moving users from DOS to Windows; but more than simply providing an intuitive GUI, users are freed from the task of managing or maintaining the operating system through a range of remotely implemented, automatic services."

Having successfully deployed and remotely maintained a Linux-based Internet solution in a K-12 environment, where low on-site maintenance requirements and ease-of-use are especially critical, BASCOM is set to deploy a series of Linux-based thin server software solutions for the small- to mid-sized business and government markets.

BASCOM's Internet Communications Server (ICS)

The ICS is an easy-to-install thin server software solution designed specifically for the K-12 community. The ICS offers efficient network connectivity, a pre-configured firewall, proxy caching, and curriculum-based content management via Web-based tools and an education portal. As BASCOM's customers often lack the resources to install, configure, and administrate multiple products from multiple vendors, ICS combines a host of needed features into a low-maintenance solution offering simple, Web-based interfaces for initial set-up and configuration. In addition to today's ICS upgrade (conducted through an encrypted channel), BASCOM backs up customer servers automatically over the Internet on a daily basis, and automatically updates its education portal, the "Global Chalkboard," with new Web content selected and reviewed by the company's staff of educators.

Upgrade Highlights With this release, the ICS embeds Caldera Systems' OpenLinux 2.2 operating system, as part of a remote upgrade pushed to school systems operating in 10 states.

The ICS upgrade features the following:

  • The latest version of the Linux "kernel" or core software, vastly improving network and memory performance
  • The interfaces have been streamlined and made more intuitive
  • Improved support for broadband cable and DSL connectivity
  • Optimized proxy cache
  • Enhanced diagnostics features for improved troubleshooting
"Caldera Systems and Bascom are committed to helping customers tap into the strength and power of Linux," said Ransom Love, president and CEO of Caldera Systems. "By upgrading their products to include OpenLinux 2.2, Bascom delivers the point and click 'Linux for Business' solution that will enable Linux customers to become even more productive - faster."
