BASCOM Releases New PlayRight ™, a Comprehensive YouTube and Video Content Management System for its Filter Solutions

New PlayRight™ Promotes Productive Learning with Videos
PlayRight, BASCOM's new built-in, comprehensive YouTube and video management solution, is now included in these filter solutions—Global Chalkboard, Frontera, and Patronus. In addition to YouTube filtering, PlayRight is packed with these slick features:

  • Removes Comments & Suggested Videos
Now a YouTube video can be viewed without distractions. Enabling the new PlayRight setting on the Add Lesson/Profile screen removes comments and thumbnail images of suggested videos.

Caution: Your browser's cache must be cleared before being able to view YouTube videos without comments or suggested videos. For assistance, please call BASCOM Technical Support at 1-888-922-2726 (Option 3).

PlayRight also works with channels, so you can create a complete repository of videos without comments or suggested videos displaying.

  • Includes TeacherTube and SchoolTube
PlayRight now supports allowing only those videos you want students to view on TeacherTube.com and SchoolTube.com by following the same procedure used to allow a YouTube video.

  • Supports Shortened URLs
The shortened URL appearing under the "Link to the video" can now be used to allow a single video by copying it onto the Allowed Sites list.

Other new features in this release:

  • AUP Reports
A new Acceptable Use Policy report is now available to view those users that have agreed to your policies.

  • Predefined Firewall Rules
Additional predefined firewall rules have been added to support iChat®, secure mail ports, and video conferencing.

  • Customized Blocked Site Screen
When using the Feedback Message option on the Block Site Notification screen, are you getting feedback emails that are missing useful information? If so, you can now code variables on your web server to retrieve URLs, blocked reasons, and lessons. For more information, call Technical Support at 1-888-922-2726 (Option 3).

For Patronus Administrators... Enhancements in Security and Improved Security

A new Patronus release includes enhancements in security and improved functionality.

* Ability to assign a priority to groups so when a user is included in more than one group, there is an easy way to determine which profile determines the Internet access for that user. The new OU/Group Order Priority selection found under Directory Services is used to determine the priority of groups. Click on the group and drag it towards the top to increase the priority-where #1 in the list is the highest priority.

Keep in mind that a Directory Service User takes priority over a group. If a Directory Service Object specific to a user is created, that determines the profile instead of the group.

* For up-to-date security as new dynamic proxies develop, the Dynamic Proxy Detection System for Patronus continues to evolve in lockstep with these challenges. This detection system uses a heuristic approach that analyzes patterns in the requested URL. If Patronus detects a suspicious pattern for any site not yet blocked by the Remote Proxies filter category, it dynamically stops access to that site.

* More flexibility in network administration with the new ability to define static routes for all Patronus network configurations.

For detailed information on any of these new features click on the HELP button in the upper, right-hand corner. This immediately launches you into a dynamic HELP system.

For Global Chalkboard Administrators... Enhancements in Security and Improved Security

The new Global Chalkboard includes enhancements in security and improved functionality.

* Ability to assign a priority to groups so when a user is included in more than one group, there is an easy way to determine which lesson determines the Internet access for that user. Click on the group and drag it towards the top to increase the priority-where #1 in the list is the highest priority.

Keep in mind that a Directory Service User takes priority over a group. If a Directory Service Object specific to a user is created, that determines the lesson instead of the group.

* For up-to-date security as new dynamic proxies develop, the Global Chalkboard's Dynamic Proxy Detection System continues to evolve in lockstep with these challenges. This keeps students focused on their work by eliminating Internet distractions such as social networking sites.

This detection system uses a heuristic approach that analyzes patterns in the requested URL. If the Global Chalkboard detects a suspicious pattern for any site not yet blocked by the Remote Proxies filter category, it dynamically stops access to that site.

* More flexibility in network administration with the new ability to define static routes for all Global Chalkboard network configurations.

* For improvements in workflow, the Lesson Creator and Web Library now share the same category structure. If there are sites in a category of the Web Library you want to use, it is also possible to create a complementary Global Chalkboard lesson to be filed in that same category. This allows you to easily reference, by category, sites in the Web Library and lessons in the Global Chalkboard for a specific curriculum topic.

For Patronus Administrators... New release packed with enhancements

* Granular delivery of specific YouTube videos or channels.
Computers in the children's section can now be directed to specific YouTube videos or channels while blocking all other YouTube content. Channels are a series of videos created by the same entity; for example, the White House and PBS have their own channels.

The process is easy. Just follow the new procedure provided in HELP under "Add/Edit Profile" and then "Allowing YouTube Videos & Channels."

* Better performance that saves both bandwidth and time by caching YouTube videos.
To significantly conserve bandwidth Patronus now has the ability to save selected Web videos onto the hard drive—a process known as caching. As a result, when you want your librarians or patrons working at different computers to view the same YouTube video, it will stream and play faster.

* New Acceptable Use Policy splash screen for notification to patrons of your Internet guidelines or any other vital communication before accessing the Internet.
For patrons using their own laptops your library may wish to institute an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) which requires agreement in order to access the Internet. The screen can also be used to alert patrons of any other vital information. For flexibility in administration, specific computers and/or IP ranges of computers can be excluded from receiving the AUP screen.

* More flexibility in network administration with the ability to reserve IP addresses for specific machines when using DHCP.
Now selected devices on your network can keep the same IP address by assigning its MAC address to that IP. This is helpful for devices such as servers and printers, which usually require a static IP to function properly on the network.

* SafeSearch support when using Microsoft's new bing.com search engine.

* Support for multicast routing to reduce network traffic from multicast-enabled portions of the Internet.
Streaming of video, audio or other multimedia content from the Internet to multiple computers simultaneously can consume massive amounts of bandwidth. Patronus now supports multicasting, which can send a single video stream to an entire library at once, saving huge amounts of bandwidth. However, multicasting requires support from your Internet Service Provider, and can only be enabled and configured by contacting BASCOM support.

Enhancements in DHCP Options for Easily Managing Leases
For those networks using Patronus as a DHCP server, there is now the ability to define which IP addresses have been defined as leases and when they expire in the DHCP Server option in Network Settings. Leases can also be monitored and deleted for temporary use using the new Active DHCP Leases option in Troubleshooting.

Improved Searching for Workstations/Ranges & Categories
A new search box on the Workstations and Ranges screen enables you to immediately locate a workstation or range. Also, we've improved our category search so that you can easily find the correct category for a specific URL.
