Sixteen computers were officially dedicated in a ceremony today, forming the basis for what is to become a wide-ranging Intranet for the Diocese. Funded in part by a Bell Atlantic grant, the program used BASCOM's core technology to provide the curriculum-based Internet access.
The RVC Diocese Intranet Service connects schools within the over 60 school district to a private, centralized Web portal, which the Diocesan Education Department can populate according to the school system's unique curriculum and educational standards. This portal also provides access to private teacher and student chat services, enabling members of the system to interact with each other in real time within an exclusive communications forum. In addition to these features, schools connected to the Service receive access to BASCOM's Access Management Engine or AME.
Commenting on educational scope of BASCOM's AME technology, Sister Joanne Callahan, superintendent of diocesan schools, said, "We've done what we think is educationally sound. Our sense is that the teacher should be choosing what is curricularly appropriate for children."
"A teacher doesn't give out 20 different texts in a classroom," remarked Peter Cirasole, president of BASCOM, also describing the AME's content selection features. "We choose what we want them to look at, and this is the same thing."
The unveiling, which took place at St. Martin de Porres Regional School, was widely attended by school and Diocesan officials as well as numerous students anxious to experience the newly-introduced interactivity.
