The Long Island Software and Technology Network a non-profit corporation founded by local industry leaders created the awards program as part of its overall mission to promote Long Island's software and technology companies, bringing the region into the national spotlight for technology development.
BASCOM Global Internet Services, Inc. of Farmingdale was awarded first prize in the Children's Internet Applications category at an awards dinner attended by over 500 members of the Long Island software and technology industry, which featured Director of Brookhaven National Laboratories John Marburger as the keynote speaker BASCOM's Chief Technology Officer Robert DeRosa said, regarding this achievement, "It's an honor to receive this award, but it's a special honor to have your hard work recognized by your peers. "With peers that include over 350 cutting-edge technology companies, that recognition is an award unto itself.
BASCOM developed the Access Management Engine (or AME) as a way for K-12 schools to create safe, focused, classroom environments for Internet use, while surpassing the limitations presented by "filtering" software. Where filtering software often comes with predetermined "block" lists of web sites, chosen by its developers, BASCOM's AME enables schools to create their own selections ofInternet web sites and services.
Silicon Island's Industry LeadersThis innovation places BASCOM at the forefront of a growing trend, one which led members of the local industry to found an organization such as LISTnet. Software and technology development is rapidly replacing aerospace as the primary source of growth and employment within the Long Island economy. This trend is producing companies like BASCOM, who challenge the place Silicon Valley holds within the national technology industry. Through their cooperative efforts, LISTnet members hope to continue this growing awareness of Long Island's achievements.
At a time when schools and libraries nationwide are caught between the need to ensure children's safety and the need to have unlimited access to useful Internet resources, BASCOM's technology provides a comprehensive solution. LISA judges have recognized the significance and value of such a solution and affirmed the fact that Long Island companies can provide answers for national needs.
